Walking down Centre Street in our neighborhood, Jamaica Plain, we ran into this: a small, pretty drinking glass hanging in a sapling tree in front of First Baptist Church. The cup’s ballast seemed to be a rock. The tree was also decorated with a garland of red, yarn flowers.
Remnants of a ceremony? Science project? What’s your guess?

Hi friend! I was googling for a pic of First Baptist JP and saw your post about the cup in our tree. I’m here to explain the mystery – sort of. The garland of hearts IS part of a ceremony. The tree was dedicated in honor of long-time church volunteer and JP resident Phyllis Meserlian, so we put the hearts up for her (she is still alive, by the by, it’s not a memorial). I wish I knew who added the cup… but I will put this out to the universe – I was really hoping more cups and/or other things would appear after the first one. They haven’t yet, but I’m still hoping. Thanks for helping to explain the mystery. One of my favorite aspects of keeping this blog are the occasions when friendly people drop by with insights, encouragement, and suggestions.
This past week, I saw two families playing in the grass near that very same tree in front of the church. One of the girls (age 7 or 8) noticed the garland and shouted: these are so cute. hey, they’re hearts! Many admirers.
