Spotted this near the Johnson Playground in Jamaica Plain. Our first thought: Fat Frog Ice Cream.
What do you think?

For at least a year, my bike commute route has taken me past a speckled white contraption located outside a brick building in the Cambridgeport neighborhood of Cambridge.
At first I thought it might be a type of sculpture (right down the road is a stone sculpture that reminds me of a dragon’s hindquarters.) Then I decided, since it’s vaguely bike-shaped, it must be a hood intended to protect bikes from weather. But that seemed impractical: what institution, business, or city-living individual would go through the trouble of purchasing and mounting such a bulky apparatus for the benefit of just one or two bikes?
So I decided, despite my hunches, that I really had no clue what it was. Today, I was getting my hair trimmed in that same neighborhood and grabbed at the opportunity to satisfy my curiosity.
That’s right, folks: a bike lid.

Not a great photo but certainly a great mystery. I saw multiple nitrogen tanks hanging out on street corners in Manhattan one evening when I was out walking with friends. Um . . . why?

I appreciate clever guerilla art, whether it’s yarn bombing, handmade additions to street signs, or a bench that, on second glance, is no ordinary bench.
This What Is It might be better categorized as a Friday Favorite, because it’s cheating a bit. (Shh!) The internet, turns out, has lots to say about the mysterious cradle bench bolted into place very near the normal benches on Jamaica Pond.

Walking down Centre Street in our neighborhood, Jamaica Plain, we ran into this: a small, pretty drinking glass hanging in a sapling tree in front of First Baptist Church. The cup’s ballast seemed to be a rock. The tree was also decorated with a garland of red, yarn flowers.
Remnants of a ceremony? Science project? What’s your guess?

Not that I can keep up with myself, but I’m starting a new series* on this blog called: What Is It? There are so many things I pass on my travels that I wonder each time I see them, what IS that?
For example. What’s this? A bike bag? A bike bowtie?
*Series, you ask? Sure! Like Librarytour, This Moment, and Friday Favorite.
